With the Golden Globes behind us and the Oscars to come, we are now truly in the middle of film awards season.

And a number of those tipped for success will be appearing at the Playhouse in coming months.

The first week of February is particularly busy with three big releases being screened.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which features an acclaimed performance from British actor Idris Elba as the late South African hero, is being shown on Saturday, February 1, Wednesday, February 5, and Thursday, February 6, at 7.30pm.

On Tuesday, February 4, at 7.30pm, it’s the turn of Nebraska, the latest road-trip movie from the director of The Descendants, while on Friday, February 7, also at 7.30pm, it’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, starring Ben Stiller.

The Railway Man, based on the book by Berwick man Eric Lomax, returns from February 11 to 13, followed by Robert Redford’s bravura solo performance in All is Lost on February 13 and the ensemble piece Last Vegas, which features Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, on February 14 and 15.

One of the Academy Awards frontrunners, American Hustle, is being screened on February 25 and again on March 13 with the all-star comedy-drama August: Osage County coming on March 20.
