A popular hay show which provides fun for all the family and raises cash for local causes is set to take place next weekend.

The Simonside Hay Show is being held at the Gate pub at Forestburngate, on Sunday, February 8, from noon onwards.

Organised by Hedley Heron, stalwart fund-raiser for the Great North Air Ambulance Service and many other charities, and treasurer of the Simonside Country Fair committee, the Hay Show raises money specially for charities and good causes associated with children and families.

Proceeds from the 2014 Hay Show were distributed to Rothbury Middle School art project (£400), Holly Watson’s hippotherapy sessions (£270), Rothbury Scouts (£250), Northumberland Army Cadet Force (£250) and St Oswald’s Hospice (£200).

Entries to the hay competition from local farmers will be judged by a top-secret, and highly-skilled, panel during the morning and some very useful cash prizes awarded.

The show then opens to the public at noon with a rousing performance from the Rothbury Highland Pipe Band.

Hay entries will be auctioned at around 2pm, along with an array of gifts and pledges from local businesses and donors.

Publicity officer Louise Kirkwood said: “It’s a great chance to snap up some unusual bargains – maybe a scrumptious afternoon tea or delicious dinner for two as a Valentine’s treat for your special person.”
