REVIEW: X-Men Apocalypse

Lots of negativity, bad scores and those saying it wasn't as good as the last instalment, Days of Future Past. I can confirm that, in my opinion, Apocalypse is good, funny and just as good as its predecessor.

The story focuses on the rise of Apocalypse and his mission to 'renew' the world by destroying it, and also setting up the formation of the new X-Men.

It's written well enough, with no overly obvious plot holes that I could see. There has been the repeat of the Magneto storyline, and while tragic for him, it is the usual repeat of him switching sides as per usual. Without a doubt though, Michael Fassbender still plays him brilliantly and James Mcavoy is still great as Professor X.

The newcomers, Sophie Tuner as the young Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as a young Cyclops, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as younger Nightcrawler are all pretty decent, having a lot to live up to. They all fulfil their characters well, and it's nice to see a fresh take on these characters with a chance to do them even better than before.

The return of Quicksilver (Evan Peters) is the best though, with his own little scene being a reason to see Apocalypse all over again. For those who saw his moment in Days Of Future Past, this scene holds much to look forward to.

While definitely a more mature X-Men, Apocalypse still feels like it could have had achieved this more with a 15 age rating, rather than the 12A it's been gifted. The retelling of some of the superheroes beginnings such as Cyclops are rather unnecessary, and it feels like more focus could have been given to the overall world domination plan and final fight. Overall though, the narrative works fairly well although I'm starting to grow tired of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and of the fact Magneto can't pick a side.

But generally the acting (if a little emotionless on Sophie Tuner's side), the interjection of humour and a pretty solid plot all makes X-Men Apocalypse worth seeing both as a regular film and as an X-Men film.
