Funding boost for theatre

Alnwick Playhouse has been awarded the funding by Persimmon Homes North East as part of the regional house builder’s Community Champions initiative.

The payout follows last year’s transformation of the Bondgate Without venue’s Green Room by 15 pupils at the town’s Duchess’s Community High School.

They used up-cycling techniques and a small budget to redecorate it in a 1950s’ style.

Claire Newton, arts development manager for the Playhouse, which opened in 1925 and re-opened in 1990 after closing 11 years previously, said: “Thanks to this donation from Persimmon Homes, we can start working towards our next ambition for the backstage areas and invite groups to come forward who would like to be part of the redecoration challenge for our dressing rooms.

“The space is regularly used by local community groups, and the work that has been completed to date provides a cool and calming space for all to enjoy.

“We can’t wait to work with young people to make the dressing rooms, corridor space and toilets just as vibrant.”

Debbie Zaben, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes North East, said: “Alnwick Playhouse is a wonderful and vibrant arts centre and a remarkably strong and valuable part of the community.

“We are only too pleased to be able to offer our support.

“We now want to hear from more clubs, groups and good causes as we look to allocate more funding over the next month.

“All we ask is that they have already worked hard to raise money themselves, and we will then match this effort with funding of up to £1,000.”
