The stars have been out in force in Alnwick today as the filming of ITV blockbuster Downton Abbey continues.

Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, and Michelle Dockery, as Lady Mary, were spotted in the Pastures opposite Alnwick Castle with film crews this morning. The scene appeared to show members of the Crawley family taking a stroll by the riverside.

And two vintage Rolls Royces were seen travelling down The Peth and over the Lion Bridge.

There has been huge excitement all week as producers of the popular drama chose Alnwick to set the Christmas special and some scenes for the regular series.

Earlier in the week, leading cast members Hugh Bonneville, as Robert Crawley, Kevin Doyle, who plays Joseph Molesley, and Rob James-Collier (Thomas Barrow) have been seen in the Northumberland town.

A summery shooting party was filmed in the Bowburn picnic area, between the castle and Alnwick Garden, while Kevin Doyle was pictured in a snowy scene in Bailiffgate, where the Duchess’s Community High School building was turned into a pub called The Crown and Anchor. The state rooms in the castle have been closed for much of the week and lighting rigs have been erected outside. The barbican entrance to the castle was renamed HMP York, and Michelle Dockery, as Lady Mary Crawley, was filmed getting into a car and driving up to it.

Downton Abbey is set to return to our TV screens for a fifth series in the autumn.
