THESE amazing images of our Moon and Earth are the most high definition in history, taken by the Kaguya lunar orbiter.
The Japanese Space Agency craft was launched last year, and reached the Moon on October 3.

It is equipped with the latest in high-definition television cameras, which have been rolling as it circles the planetary body at just 100km above the surface.

To see the incredible footage shot by Kaguya of the Earth rising over the lunar surface, click this link.

In March it is due to decrease its altitude to just 20km, allowing extremely detailed close-ups of the lunar surface to be captured.

Kaguya - which means 'mouse' in Japanese - will end its life in June, when it crashes.
