FROM the village that brought you the Were-Rabbit comes a new mystery – the Turnip Tipper.

The sudden appearance of a mound of swedes at the end of Mouldshaugh Lane in Felton has baffled parish leaders.

The site has been plagued by fly-tipping in recent years, but never before has a load of the root vegetables – known locally as baigies – been dumped on unsuspecting villagers.

Parish chairman Tony Hood said he didn't know of a farmer locally who was growing turnips.

"I wouldn't imagine it being a farmer who was responsible anyway, because turnips are at a premium at the moment," he said.

"This is certainly the first time I can recall this happening. It's very unusual."

Parish councillor Marion Clark added: "The turnips, along with some topsoil, are now part of this great pile which has been growing at that site. It's somewhere that people seem to just dump waste, but no one ever sees them doing it."
