Over 100 pupils from James Calvert Spence College in Amble are preparing to take part in the 31st Children’s Cancer Run at the weekend. The middle school-aged youngsters are seen in their event T-shirts looking forward to taking part in the run and raising much needed funds for charity.

Democracy starts at a young age in Alnwick as proved by pupils at St Michael’s First School when they held elections for their school council. Recently elected county councillor Gordon Castle was there to oversee proceedings as the voting took place.

VIDEO - St Paul’s Chess video

Puipils at St Paul’s RCVA Middle school in Alnwick have returned from a successful visit to a chess tournament in Newcastle. After pitting their wits against some quality opposition, four youngsters came away with rosettes and two now go to the next stage of the competition in Manchester.

Pupils at Ford First School celebrated May Day in their traditional way. Pupils held a colourful procession from the school to the village green where the oldest girl in the school was crowned May Queen. Following this family, friends and villagers delighted in watching a display of maypole dancing by the youngsters.

Thanks to help from Alnwick Rotary Club, thousands of books at the Duke’s Middle School in Alnwick have been reclassified and pupils are able to take part in a new reading scheme suited to their individual needs.

FOUNDATION stage pupils at Amble’s Links First School celebrated May Day by taking part in a session of maypole dancing.Wearing handmade sashes and crowns the youngsters enjoyed wrapping ribbons around the pole in the warm spring sunshine.

Year five pupils at The Duke’s Middle School in Alnwick were treated to a workshop and performance on Kathakali dance and drama. Gazette photographer Jane Coltman visited the school to see Kalamandalam Vijayakumar put on his stunning show.
