One of the fastest-growing and most exciting sports in the country has a new junior section in Alnwick.
And the youngsters have got off to a flying start.
Six young triathletes aged between 12 and 15 trained together for six weeks to develop the skills necessary to enter and complete the Darlington Junior Triathlon on June 16.
All were superb finishers, and in addition, Dan Fletcher, 12, came second in the boys’ Tristar 3 event, with Jenny Bolam, 13, fourth in the same age group for the girls.
Beth Lewington, 15, was second in the girls’ youth event. The other three athletes, Abbie Lewington, 12, Jack Carrigan, 12, and Jack Douglas, 12, all showed great potential. They are all signed up for further triathlons during this racing season.
The group continue to train six days each week with coached sessions twice a week – a bike/transition session on Wednesday and a pool session each Saturday.
Alnwick Tri already benefits from some of the best qualified coaches in the country who have enthusiastically taken on the challenge of coaching the youngsters. The emphasis is on fitness and fun.
A very successful kids triathlon was held in Alnwick last year on July 8, and it is hoped similar events will be held in the town in the future as the junior club develops.
