A WINNING relay team has overcome a Florida jinx and is back in the running to defend its title.
At last year’s Kielder Run Bike Run, a team of Gentoo employees powered over the finish line in first place and hoped to repeat the challenge again this year. But an injury almost scuppered their plans.
One of the team members injured his achilles during a 5km road race in Florida and he didn’t know if he would be able to compete.
Brian Bewick, 46, from Silksworth, Sunderland, had been in Florida for his daughter’s wedding. He said: “I completed the race but then had trouble with my Achilles heel ever since. We had hoped to enter the Kielder Run Bike Run sooner but it was touch and go whether I’d be fit enough.”
The Kielder Run Bike Run, sponsored this year by redspottedhanky.com, gives teams of three (or individuals) the chance to tackle the Lakeside Way, the Kielder Marathon course route that encircles Kielder Water, in three stages – first, an 11km run, second a 26km cycle ride and finally a 5km sprint.
The relay race takes place on Saturday, October 8, and there is also a 10K race on the same day. The main marathon event and children’s races are on Sunday, October 9.
