Warkworth slip to second defeat in just four days

Berwick beat Warkworth for the second time in four days to take the spoils in the Northumberland Premier League on Saturday.

Having beaten their opponents midweek on the T20, Berwick won the toss and elected to put the home side in to bat.

The Berwick bowlers were in good form, claiming four early wickets, and figures of 3-27 for Sean Wales and 2-31 for Steven Emery saw Warkworth restricted to 111-9 in their 40 overs.

Steven Anderson top-scored on 43, but of the other batters, only Adam Hall (18) and Mark Spoors (12) managed to reach double figures as Berwick kept it tight.

It was a relatively comfortable target for Berwick and with skipper Scott Middlemist leading by example, hitting an unbeaten 61, which included 10 boundaries, they eased their way to victory at 113-4 in the 30th over.

Elsewhere in the same division, it was the Liam Hindmarsh and Cam McGregor show as Tillside recorded a fine 74-run win over Kirkley in the Northumberland Premier League.

Put into bat, the visitors were soon in trouble as they lost Turnbull and Birkett early on both LBW, Sean Whitty soon followed and when Matthew Whitty was run out going for a suicide second Tillside were 32-4.

McGregor joined Hindmarsh at the crease and the pair set about rescuing the innings.

Both played sensibly and they added 115 for the fifth wicket before Hindmarsh was out for a well-made 80.

McGregor helped take the score to 175 before he fell for 50, but no other Tillside batsman could reach double figures as the innings closed on 198 all out.

Hindmarsh then made a dream start with the ball as he got two wickets in the first over of Kirkley’s reply.

Another soon followed for the young seamer reducing the hosts to 23-3 from six overs.

McGregor picked up the last three wickets to finish with 5-43 and with it a fruitful day for the two all-rounders, moving Tillside up to fifth in the table.
