WINNER: Andrew Somerville – Football

LOCAL sporting stars and volunteers were honoured at the Alnwick and District Sports Council Annual Awards Night.

The prestigious ceremony took place at Alnwick Playhouse on Saturday evening.

Andrew Somerville was named Volunteer of the Year at the event.

Dedicated Andrew lifted the Volunteer of the Year award for his services to football and admitted: “The highlight for me is getting all the kids to play the game.”

The 40-year-old contributed greatly to female football in 2010. Taking up the post of Longhoughton Rangers’ female development officer in the summer, he threw himself into the role and worked closely with the County FA to secure free training sessions by FA coaches for local girls.

This led to the formation of an U11s girls team who now compete in the Northumberland Girls League. His other key success of the year was to establish a ladies team at Longhoughton.

Andrew also organised a charity event, raising more than £1,000 for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and club funds.

He is the club’s child welfare officer and manages the U14s boys B team, as well as being an assistant coach for Newcastle United at its new U10 and U8 district development centre, at Longhoughton.

Category sponsor: Alnwick Lions.

Short-listed candidates: Brenda Mallen (athletics); Richard Lillico (cricket); Laurence Reeves (cricket); Grounds team (Alnwick Town Football Club); Grounds team (Alnwick Cricket Club).
