ALNMOUTH & Lesbury U11 cricket team continued their remarkable season on Sunday by winning the Northumberland Knockout Cup.
In a tense and exciting game, the Seasiders were victorious against South Northumberland by a margin of 13 runs.
Alnmouth were asked to bat first on a damp wicket. They did well to muster 255 runs for the loss of only one wicket (teams start on 200 and lose six runs for every dismissal).
Leading scorers were Joe Tudor, 12 not out, and Nick Robertson, 14 not out.
South Northumberland then came in to bat and were comfortably up with the run rate and punishing every bad ball.
Tight fielding, especially by Sam Thompson, Cameron Thorpe and Lukas Robinson, meant the visitors needed 20 off the final four overs which left the game very much in the balance.
Good work behind the stumps from wicket-keeper Archie Elder, who took a catch and two stumpings, halted the batters’ progress and left them 13 runs short at the end of the game.
Pick of the bowlers were Tom Harrop who took one for eight and Ollie Tulip who took one for seven.
Alnmouth have played 15 games this season and won 14 of them.
To win the County Cup against such illustrious opponents really is an excellent achievement and a fitting climax to the year and proof that team spirit and endeavour are valuable characteristics.
