ONE hundred and seventy seven people were on the start line for the eighth Alnwick Sprint Tri on Sunday and for nearly one third of them, it was their first race.
The event included a 500m pool swim at Willowburn Leisure Centre, 13-mile bike ride to the coast at Boulmer via Lesbury and back via Longhoughton, finishing with an off-road three-mile run. In the men’s race, Greg Chambers was first out the water with Tyne Tri’s Phil Aiston only four seconds behind, RedVenom.co.uk’s Alan Copland seven seconds further back and Alnwick Tri’s Jack Ferguson in fourth place, 12 seconds behind.
Copland put in the fastest bike leg of the day, in 36m 14s, to take the lead with TRI’s John Barker just over a minute behind and Triand Rescue’s Daryl Oguana third.
On the run, Copland and John Barker consolidated the first two places but Oguana ran a 17m 12s 5k to overtake Dave Barker and take the third spot overall.
In the Women’s race Becki Newman was first out of the swim, 35s ahead of Absolute Tri’s Emma Pearson and One Life’s Claire Jackson in third. Newman faded to fourth on the bike with Jackson and TRI’s Joanna Reed passing her. Newman clawed one place back on the run but was unable to catch Jackson who held on to second place.
Thirty seven Alnwick Tri members took part. The juniors (U20) took the honours with the only category wins coming in both the male first and second places in the female juniors. Ferguson was also the fastest male Alnwick tri member, with Lisa Sutton taking the female Alnwick honours.
The story of the day was the category win by Dereck Drinnan, father of one of Alnwick Tri Club’s founding members, Mike Drinnan. Alnwick Tri 2011 was Derek’s first triathlon, completing the swim in 17m, the bike in 1hr and the run in 31m. Not the fastest of the day by any means but Derek is in a category of his own, literally. He is too old for the vintage category but officially there is not a catergory for anyone over 69 so we had to make up the new category of super vintage (70-79 years) for him.
