Top and tail for north county rivals

Have your say

Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League, Division B2

There is a very stark contrast between the two north Northumberlands sides’ fortunes in Division B2.

While Alnmouth and Lesbury’s second XI is sitting pretty at the top of the table, having won 13 matches this term, Alnwick twos are rock bottom, with just two victories to their name.

Alnwick weren’t in league action on Saturday, but Alnmouth played host to Consett II, winning by four wickets.

The home side won the toss and put the visitors into bat, which turned out to be a good decision as their attack ripped through Consett’s batting line-up

The away side almost looked completely down and out, languishing at 7-4 and then 17-7 before Ian Cox scored a half-century.

A knock of 25 from D Talbott down the order saw Consett reach 101 when they were bowled out in the 25th over.

Rich Neil took four wickets for 22, while Simon Poole finished with figures of 3-33.

In reply, the Alnmouth batting performance wasn’t particularly inspiring, but the bowlers had done their bit to ensure victory was comfortable enough.

Darren Gray top-scored with 27 not out, while the visitors’ bowlers gifted the home side with 20 in extras – the second-highest score of the innings.

This weekend, Alnmouth travel down to Bedlington, who sit one spot behind them in second, while Alnwick, desperate for points, host Burnopfield, who are currently in third.
