Alnwick Premier Darts League
The season kicked off in style on Friday night with 16 teams playing in two divisions of eight teams in each.
Some sides have moved venues, most notably league champions Alnwick Gate A become the Travellers and are now based at Alnwick Golf Club, TeamDinga now play from the Market Tavern and last season’s Division B runners-up Alnwick Gate C are now based at the Dirty Bottles to become The Bottles Boys, The Bar Bell B become the Bottles A and we have two new teams to the league AWMC C and Shilbottle B.
The Travellers opened up their campaign at home at The Golf Club and the change of venue proved no obstacle as they won 6-1 over the Bottles A. The John Bull turned in possibly the result of the week, also winning 6-1 away at the Oddies B, with Jeff Pritchard fresh from his fantastic charity walk effort scoring the lone point for the Oddies.
The Bottles Boys and the George had a hard-fought battle, with the George shading it 4-3, while TeamDinga won 5-2 against last season’s Division B champs AWMC B, with John Dennis of the club hitting the first 180 of the new season.
In Division B, new teams AWMC C and Shilbottle B faced each other, with the Alnwick men fighting back to win 4-3 after Shilbottle had taken a 3-1 lead after the singles. AWMC A, meanwhile, enjoyed a 5-2 victory over the Market Tavern.
It was no easy match, with Willy Oliver of the club checking out on 100, but Kieran Marsh of the Tavern went better with a 107 finish. The Hotspur and the Oddies A had another close match, with the Hotspur edging it 4-3, but Shilbottle A immediately showed their promotion ambitions by turning in the only whitewash of the week, beating the very unlucky Alnwick Golf Club 7-0 to sit at the top of the first league table.
