Year nine pupil Toby Parks impressed at the English Schools North East InterCounties Athletics Championships earlier this month.
Representing Northumberland, the student from Amble’s James Calvert Spence College came fourth in the discus, at Clairville, Middlesbrough.
Competing in the Junior Boys section, his distance of 29.49m was the furthest thrown among the county’s competitors.
He was just over four metres short of the winner David Whittle, of Cumbria, who launched the discus 33.95m.
Toby booked his place after finishing second at the Area Athletics event at Gateshead International Stadium at the beginning of June.
Representing his school and north Northumberland, he had also finished fourth in the shot putt in the Area event.
Fellow JCSC pupil Jacob Wallace, also Year nine, was joint second in the 200m sprint in the Areas.
He had sealed a spot at the English Schools North East InterCounties contest, but was unable to compete.
JCSC students Sam Gair (Year 10) and Abby Sheldon (Year 9) also competed at the Areas.
Sam came fourth in shot putt and Abby was sixth in the 1500m.
