Alnwick’s junior triathletes proved themselves a force to be reckoned with in their final triathlon of the season.

Seven youngsters, aged between 12 and 15, travelled to Darlington on Saturday to compete in the Gr8 Events Junior Triathlon and each produced a season’s-best performance, including three podium finishes.

In Tristar 2, for athletes aged 11 to 12, Abbie Lewington came third in the girls’ event, with Jack Douglas finishing fourth in the boys’.

In Tristar 3, for ages 13 to 14, Dan Fletcher, who recently represented the North East at the British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships, came in fourth in the boys’ event. Jack Carrigan took almost two minutes off his previous best time to come in seventh. Jenny Bolam produced a great performance to finish fourth in the same age group for girls.

But it was in the girls’ youth category where Alnwick Juniors had their best results.

Emily Stenton, in her first triathlon, came in second after a powerful swim, with Beth Lewington just behind her in third place.

The Junior section of Alnwick Tri Club was only formed in May this year and has grown from just two members to become a thriving, dedicated group of young triathletes who have had an amazing first season.

They get fantastic support and coaching from the senior club, particularly from Tracey Sample and Ian Simon, both Team GB Triathletes and also from Hesus Kidd, Ironman Triathlete, who has also recently taken on a coaching role within the junior section.

It is expected that a second Junior Tri squad will be formed early next year in time for the new racing season.
