Alnwick Junior Harriers round-up
Sunday saw the hosting of the second ‘minors’ Grand Prix meeting organised by the North of Tyne Athletics’ Network at Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay.
The six Alnwick athletes comprised of three boys and three girls all from school Years 4 and 5.
Billy Clayton, eight, was attending his first event and competed well on his debut.
He ran a fantastic 600m race, resisting the temptation to set off too quickly, then finished strongly over the last 200m overtaking half the field to finish in second place.
He then managed a big throw (23.28m) in the howler competition to finish second again.
Cameron Cullen competed alongside Billy and managed a huge 25-second personal best in the 600m, showing what improvement a bit of practice can make.
The Year 5 girls represented the club well with Millie Breese runner-up in the long jump (2.88m) and Lauren Brown winning both the 600m (2:02) and the howler with a pb throw of 24.36m.
Talia Thompson competed in her first outdoor competition, giving good performances in all her events.
Finlay Telfer was the only Year 5 boy from Alnwick this week, but performed well in all four events, managing a pb throw of 24.72m in the howler to give him second place.
This solid performance built well on last month’s success and now places him in second place in the Grand Prix standings.
There are two meetings left in series and all the athletes are in a good position to finish well in the overall standings.
