SPORTS AWARDS: Most Improved Sportsperson winner

WINNER: Gareth Rickaby – Tennis

AMAZING – that is how young Gareth Rickaby described winning the Most Improved Sportsperson award.

Determination, coupled with bags of talent, has seen the Rothbury lad come on leaps and bounds on the court.

An able sportsman, he was recently invited to play football at Newcastle United’s football development centre – but he declined as he felt he was able to go further in tennis with the support he is receiving from his club.

It looks like this will be an ace decision.

He has been asked to play at the Northumberland County High Performance Centre on a weekly basis, which includes coaching from some of the top coaches in the North East, as well as being invited to train for the Northumberland, Durham and Cleveland County Tennis Camp.

He is also the number one junior player at his local club in Rothbury.

Gareth said: “I love playing tennis and I just want to keep on improving.”
