JOINT WINNERS: Jake Storey – Golf; Chris Wiggins – Squash

TALENTED duo Jake Storey and Chris Wiggins shared the Junior Male award – and it’s easy to see why.

Alnwick lad Jake lowered his handicap to be eligible to apply for a professional card.

He was Matchplay Champion at his home club Alnmouth (Foxton), as well as a member of their County Championship winning team. Away from his club, he is part of the Junior County Team, the Men’s County Elite Squad and Northern Region Elite Squad.

He competed in the English National Boys’ Championship and came eighth in the Scottish Boys’ Championship, as well as winning the U21 Northumberland Championship.

Jake said: “It is nice that my hard work had been recognised.”

Chris is an all-round sportsman but it is squash where he is really a hit.

In 2011, he became Alnwick Junior Champion, and won a number of competitions, including victory in the North of England Junior Open.

The Felton teenager finished 10th in the British Junior Closed Finals and is ranked 14th nationally for his age group.

Reflecting on his efforts, he said: “2011 was my best year.”

Category sponsor: Rotary Club of Alnwick.

Shortlisted candidate: Phil Winkler (athletics).
