A FORMER double Olympic medallist will make a special appearance at an annual prize-giving ceremony which rewards sporting success and commitment.
Swimming legend Nick Gillingham MBE has been named as the guest of honour for Alnwick and District Sports Council’s Annual Awards Night later this year.
Organisers of the March 16 event are delighted to have the former World, European and Commonwealth Champion on board.
Bill Batey, chairman of the Sports Council, said: “It is fitting that in Olympic year, Nick Gillingham, who won two Olympic swimming medals, will be our guest of honour and present the awards.
“We are absolutely delighted that he can be at this year’s event. I’m sure he will be an inspiration to all those who attend.”
The cream of the area’s sporting crop will be honoured at the ceremony, which takes place at Alnwick Playhouse from 7pm, admission free.
A long-standing and prestigious event, the presentation evening is one of the highlights in the local sports calendar.
To ensure that the standard is kept high and to recognise and reward the achievements and dedication of individuals and teams within the local sporting scene, the Sports Council is wanting your 2011 nominations, and once again, the Northumberland Gazette has teamed up with the Council to help.
