Alnwick 28 Rochdale 57

NORTHERN DIVISION, NORTH ONE EAST

Before yesterday’s game, Alnwick Rugby Club’s flag was lowered to half-mast and both players and spectators held a minute’s silence to mark the passing of Bob Bingham, former editor of the Northumberland Gazette.

Bob was a frequent contributor and editor of these match reports as well as holding senior offices in the club culminating in the Presidency in 1993-95.

His wisdom, wit, guidance and friendship will be missed by us all and this correspondent in particular.

Alnwick suffered a heavy defeat in the league clash at home to Rochdale.

With two good wins pre-Christmas, it was hoped that Alnwick could continue their winning ways but sadly they were given a reality check by a competent

and streetwise Lancashire side who, but for a swingeing eight-point penalty imposed by the RFU, would have been second in the league at kick-off.

In a high-scoring match, the visitors ran away with it, notching a 28-57 victory, leaving Alnwick in a precarious position at the wrong end of the league.

Of the teams around them in the table, both Northern and bottom club Sheffield won but Morpeth and Middlesbrough lost. Northern are now two points above Alnwick.

Next up for Alnwick is a trip to Driffield on Saturday.
