WINNER: Eileen Duncan – Swimming/Life-saving

LOCAL sporting stars and volunteers were honoured at the Alnwick and District Sports Council Annual Awards Night.

The prestigious ceremony took place at Alnwick Playhouse on Saturday evening.

Eileen Duncan was rewarded for her service to sport at the event.

Described at Saturday’s ceremony as ‘one of the great unsung heroines of the Alnwick sporting scene’, Eileen was honoured for her service to sport.

She has been teaching swimming and life-saving techniques to the Alnwick District Swimming and Life-Saving Club’s juniors for more than 40 years and has enabled countless children to take their first strokes and gain confidence in the water.

Many of her pupils have gone on to gain Royal Life Saving Society Awards up to distinction level and a number of them have become competitive swimmers in the North East.

She has also been club treasurer for more than 20 years and over 40 years ago she played an active role in raising funds and campaigning to get the first Alnwick swimming pool built.

“I am absolutely stunned to win,” she said, and looking back on more than four decades of sporting service, she added: “There have been hundreds of highlights.”
