Benwell & Walbottle II (144 all out) v Alnwick II (100-8)
Alnwick seconds’ fine run of form came to a grinding halt at Benwell & Walbottle’s ground, the home side winning by 44 runs.
On a very green and soggy wicket Andy Stewart won the toss and elected to bowl.
With the wicket and the outfield being quite damp, Alnwick found bowling with a wet ball difficult.
A number of boundaries were hit early in the Benwell innings due to this problem.
The Alnwick fielding was as inconsistent as the bowling, with some brilliance, particularly from Andy Stewart with a fabulous slip catch and a brilliant run-out, and some sloppy drops.
Andy Stewart and Matty Dixon brought some control during the middle part of the Benwell innings and they never looked like getting a big score as Alnwick took wickets regularly through the innings.
Matty Dixon bowled well, finishing with 2 for 35 off 12 overs and Ollie Holst was the surprise package with 2 for 5 off only three overs.
Benwell were all out off the last ball of the innings for a challenging total of 144 on a difficult wicket. S Black top-scored for the home side with 38.
With the sun out and the wicket drying by the minute, Alnwick got off to a slow start. Both openers went in quick succession with the score on 20 after 10 overs.
All the Alnwick batsmen struggled to score runs with the ball misbehaving occasionally on the drying wicket.
The run-rate creeping up all the time, Alnwick lost wickets, making it more difficult for the later batsmen.
Peter Matthewson coped with the conditions better than most with the help of some generous fielders, but when he fell to a very good catch with the score on 78 for 5, all hope of an unlikely Alnwick victory faded. His score of 35 was the only one in double figures.
The end of the match was marred by some unsportsmanlike behaviour from one of the Benwell opening bowlers, who had to be restrained by his own team following some verbals with one of the Alnwick batsmen.
There was no shame in defeat as Benwell were in the top two of the league. Alnwick will hope to avenge defeat in the return fixture at home.
