Alnwick II (93-3) v Benwell & Walbottle (92 all out)
Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League, Division B2
Alnwick II recorded their 10th league victory of the season, defeating Benwell & Walbottle by seven wickets.
Home captain Andrew Stewart won yet another toss and chose to bowl.
Andrew Wright and Olly Holst opened the attack for Alnwick and had to deal with some aggressive batting from Birell (46) early on as he took a liking to the pair’s line-and-length bowling.
Wright and Holst had to battle against blustery conditions to get through their opening overs. Tom Woodburn and Andrew Stewart were introduced into the attack at 75-0 and both had a instant impact.
Stewart bowled the impressive Birell, then Woodburn had Singh lbw.
Alnwick took control of the game with Woodburn picking up two more wickets before Stewart had another two wickets, leaving Benwell on 90-6.
Woodburn (5-20) went on to grab two more wickets to get his first second-team five-wicket haul.
Stewart (5-5) picked up another wicket and then in the 32nd over he had Saunders and Henton to claim his five-wicket haul too. Benwell finished on 92 all out.
Pete Matthewson and Harry Lobb started the Alnwick innings, but both fell cheaply. Harrison then played a loose shot to be bowled for six.
Alnwick were on 16-3 off 16 overs when Allen Thompson and Ali Graham came to the crease. The pair saw off the opening pair of Birell (2-19) and Hall (1-12) to leave the home side 40-3 off 26 overs. Thompson (45*) and Graham (20*) found another gear and started scoring freely to see Alnwick home with 11 overs to spare.
Alnwick face top-of-the-table Greenside in next week’s encounter.
