Alnwick II...4 Jesmond Parish Church..1
ALNWICK’S final league match was a top-of-the-table battle against JPC I.
Alnwick seemed to have most of the possession but JPC kept making breaks and putting the defence of E Fairbairn, Frew and Simpson under pressure. After dusting the cobwebs off her stick, Simpson hadn’t forgotten how to put in a strong tackle.
JPC played strongly on the right and made a break with a two-versus-one against keeper Graham, unfortuntely slipping the ball past her (0-1).
Alnwick’s defence switched into gear from then and E Fairbairn put in some crucial tackles to protect Graham in goal.
The home side made some good passes but couldn’t get into the D, while any further JPC shots were fought off by Graham.
In the second half, after some positional reshuffling, Alnwick turned the game around and worked much better together.
They were awarded a short-corner, which was injected in by Fornear to Dawson, who slipped it to E Brown for her to direct it to Fornear to send it in (1-1).
Alnwick won numerous short-corners and had repeated shots on goal by Dawson, E Brown and E Pringle but just couldn’t get them past the diving keeper.
Back on her preferred right side, Young made some great interceptions and moved the ball quickly up to the forwards.
A pass from Simpson to S Fairbairn in centre was taken forwards for a strike on goal for Straker to slip it in on the right post (2-1). Some great passing and sharing of the ball by the Brown sisters saw Lucy take a shot and Emma get the rebound into goal (3-1).
The final goal came from E Brown who passed two defenders and scored with a lifted reverse stick shot (4-1).
It was a brilliant effort from Alnwick and they finish a well-deserved second in the league.
