An SOS call has been made by a north Northumberland bowling club in a desperate bid to attract more members after numbers have dwindled dramatically.
The rallying call has been made by Seahouses Outdoor Bowling Club, which now has less than 30 people in its ranks.
The lowly figure has prompted secretary Steve Clement to make a plea for more recruits – amid fears the group could fold.
He said: “Like many other outdoor bowling clubs, our membership has declined over recent years.
“Many people worked hard and gave generously to enable construction of the village’s Sports and Community Centre and bowling green for the benefit of the community as a whole.
“It would be a travesty if the bowling-club facilities ceased to be available, should the club no longer be viable down to the lack of members.
“We are particularly looking for lady and younger members, but anybody is welcome.”
The club is also holding fund-raising events. A dance, with Before The Mast, takes place at Seahouses Social Club on May 24, from 8pm. Tickets are £5 on the door or in advance. Tables for four or more from Colin (01665 721337) or John (01665 721989).
Car-boot sales will take place on May 26 and August 24 at Seahouses Sports and Community Centre, from 9am to noon. Entry is 50p, U16s free. Tables/cars/vans are £6, from Stephen (01665 721374).
The season starts on Saturday, April 12, and runs until mid-September. Fees are £2 per person per hour or £54 for a season. Prospective members are given three free two-hour trial sessions. All equipment is provided. For more details, call Steve on 01665 721203.
