Low Fell’s Jonathan Archer won the annual Les Allcorn 10k on Tuesday evening – but there was plenty to cheer for host club Alnwick Harriers.

Alnwick’s Jo Gascoigne-Owens won the female race in 37.36, knocking 12 seconds off her 10k personal best (PB) to set another female club record over this distance.

Her efforts, along with Sarah Fairbairn (43.34PB) and Ella Brown (44.30, and winner of the female 35 category) helped the host club win the female team prize.

For the second year running, first Alnwick Harrier was Bruce Crombie, in 36.01, crossing the line in fifth – one place higher than last year. He won the male 40 category.

There was also a good display by younger Harriers in the event, with 16-year-old Daniel Leng finishing 10th in 37.23.

The Junior race, held before the 10k, was a success for the host club, with Adam Weightman and Rosie Murton winning the Boys’ and Girls’ races respectively.

Both runs were held in Hulne Park in glorious conditions.

Archer took the 10k honours in 34.39. He finished almost a minute ahead of second-place Andrew Hussey, of Cheltenham Harriers, with Morpeth Harriers’ youngster Sam Hancox third.

Other age category winners were Jim Alder (male 50) and Norman Clark (male 60), both of Morpeth Harriers. Low Fell won the men’s team prize.

In the female race, Gascoigne-Owens finished more than three minutes ahead of Angela McGurk from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, while North Shields Poly’s Suzanne Thew was third female. Fourth female was unattached Hilary Ross, who won the female 55 category, while Marie Drozdowicz of Elswick Harriers took the female 45 category.

A number of young Alnwick Harriers were taking part in their first 10ks. Isaac Moss, George Skirrow, Suzie Barwise-Munro and Molly Murton all performed well.

The club thanked the Duke of Northumberland, Rapid Reaction, Up and Running (Gosforth) and Alnwick Trail Runner, Jess Campbell for photos, Helen Patterson and Helen Thompson for catering, MC Mike Henry, and Mary Plumley and Sue Bolam, who organised the event and arranged marshals.
