Open success at Rothbury

Rothbury Bowling Club

ROTHBURY bowlers held their open pairs competition on Sunday, with 32 pairs taking part.

The winners were G Nelson and W Tulley from Amble who beat B Ord and A Joisce in the final.

The losing semi-finalists were G Donkin and A Oliver from Rothbury and J Oldfield and D Kay from Hirst Park.

Club officials thanked Norman Martin, who organised the competition, and the Rothbury Ladies, who provided excellent food throughout the day.

The season is now well under way and the club is having mixed results in the second division of the Clegg League, having won three and lost three.

Defending the North Northumberland League title, Rothbury got off to a flier in the first match away to Lesbury taking all eight points but were pegged back at home to Seahouses last week when the clubs shared the points.

In county competition, Rothbury hosted the semi-final of the Challenge Cup on June 11 when five clubs contested in dreadful weather conditions.

By winning all of their matches, the home club progressed to the final of that competition, which will be held at Alnwick on July 30.

In the county pairs, Tom Dixon and Chris Cairns are through to round three having won a tough away encounter against Karl Jameson and partner of St George’s Morpeth and Tom is also in round three of the fours with his rink.
