Alnwick Harriers

The weekend got off to a great start courtesy of our two competitors in the Northumberland Fell Runners-organised Alwinton Fell Race.

This is a 22.5k race with 1,830 metres of ascent and, with the gale force winds giving freezing conditions on the tops, it was a real test for Graham Simpson and Adam Fletcher.

However, both ran extremely well with Graham winning his first ever race, beating his nearest rival by a mere five seconds.

There was also success for Adam who was fourth overall and won the male 50 prize.

Results: 1-Graham Simpson, 1.45.07; 4-Adam Fletcher, 1.51.39.

Also that morning, the usual good number of Harriers took part in the 5k Druridge Bay Parkrun. Andy Squires is running into some decent form and was eighth overall in a course pb.

Next Harrier home was Ken Hodson, also in a course personal best, while Justine Norman was the club’s third runner to finish and was first in the female 40 category.

The event was also notable for the first runs in ages in Harriers vests for Christopher Watson and Helen Hinds.

Results: 8-Andy Squires, 20.52; 30-Ken Hodson, 23.00; 37-Justine Norman, 23.35; 40-Dave Hindmarsh, 24.01; 46-Claire Miller-Grossett, 24.41; 53-Kim Bronze, 25.42; 57-Samantha Fender, 26.04; 61-Gail Cuthbert, 26.20; 73-Rhona Lawson, 27.04; 84-Pam Wheldon, 28.21; 86-Christopher Watson, 28.48; 89-Lynne Buddle, 29.11; 107-Helen Hinds, 31.44.

Elsewhere, Gay and Richard Eastoe won their age 60 categories at Workington, while globe-trotting Harrier Kirsty Steed continued her tour of South African parkruns.

Results – Workington: 28-Gay Eastoe, 25.50; 29-Richard Eastoe, 25.51.

Greenpoint, Cape Town: 248-Kirsty Steed, 32.23.

Finally for the weekend, four Harriers travelled across to the Lakes to take part in the stunning, but hard, Lakeland Trails Marathon at Coniston.

Dave and Maureen Bartrum were the club’s first runners to finish, crossing the line together.

It was then off to Kendal Infirmary to fix Maureen’s face after she planted it on the ground during the race.

Morag Donoghue was not far behind, with Carol Davison further back.

Results: 75-Dave Bartrum, 5.14.18; 76-Maureen Bartrum, 5.14.18; 102-Morag Donoghue, 5.32.08; 153-Carol Davison, 5.55.47.
