ALNMOUTH and Lesbury U15s got their season off to a winning start with a victory in the first round of the ECB Cup at Kirkley.
After being put in to bat, Alnmouth made a steady start, with Alistair Batey and Andy Marshall putting on 44 for the first wicket, before Marshall was bowled for 18.
Batey soon followed for 28 but the momentum was picked up by John Briggs (22) and in particular by Alex Robson (26 not out), to help Alnmouth post a competitive total of 105 for four from their 20 overs.
Pick of the Kirkley bowlers were Ant Makepeace and Dan Gray who both got good bounce from the wicket.
Tight and accurate bowling by all the Alnmouth bowlers kept Kirkley behind the run rate and, after 14 overs, they had been restricted to 46 for five.
Makepeace (33) and Gray (17) then put together an unbeaten partnership of 51 to bring Kirkley to within nine runs of victory as they closed on 97 for five.
Edward Brunton, 2-16, Dan Burns, 1-5, Will Young, 1-12, and Andy Marshall, 1-22, were the Alnmouth wicket-takers.
