Alnwick Rugby Club were unable to wrestle away the Brett Horse Trophy after a 10-10 draw with bitter rivals Morpeth on Saturday.

With Morpeth the holders of the Horse before kick-off, the Greensfield side knew they had to win the match to get their hands on the trophy.

But try as they might, Alnwick, who were fielding mainly second-string players, were unable to use home advantage to snatch the prized possession out of Morpeth’s grasp.

Alnwick scored their points through two unconverted tries, with James Bird and Harry Annett touching down. Meanwhile, Morpeth scored a try through Andy Gayner, while Kieran Brown kicked one conversion and a penalty.

Brown’s efforts were enough to win him the man-of-the-match Dave Routledge Trophy.

Alnwick’s first team makes a return to North One East action on Saturday, January 3, when they host Pocklington.

As for Morpeth, who lead Durham/Northumberland Division One, they travel to Guisborough on the same day in a top-two showdown.
