Who was your number one?

TEN sporting stars from across north Northumberland have been short-listed for the fifth Northumberland Gazette Sports Personality of the Year Award.

A mixture of personalities throughout the area has been chosen to recognise both achievement and commitment.

Facing off for the 2011 title are athletes Emma Pringle, who finished the season ranked third in the UK for triple jump at Under 20 level, Brad Sansom, who finished third in the shot-put at the English Schools’ Championships, and Ian Harding, who dominated the long-distance running scene in Northumberland.

Footballer Luke James went from promising youth-team player to first-team star after signing a pro contract, surf kayaker Tamsin Green is now world champion and tetrathletes Steph Courty and Rebecca Barwise Munro spent the summer competing for the UK A team.

Also in the mix are squash player Chris Wiggins who rose up the UK rankings, horse rider Gayle Bloomfield, who competed nationally after previously thinking she would never ride again and bobsleigher Keith McLaughlin, who was selected for the GB2 team to compete in the European Cup.

John Bound, who has helped maintain the award-winning facilities at Alnmouth and Lesbury Cricket Club, has been chosen for his service and dedication to grass-roots sport.

Only one can be crowned champion. And it is up to you, the Gazette’s sports fans, to decide who lifts the prize and is declared the 2011 Northumberland Gazette Sports Personality.

A postal, phone and text vote is being run and closes at midday on Thursday, March 15. The nomination form for the postal vote can be found on the back page of this week’s Gazette.

The award will be presented at the Alnwick and District Sports Council Annual Awards Night, which will be held at the Alnwick Playhouse, on Friday, March 16.
