Tough fighting to take flurry of trophies
FIGHTERS from Alnwick's DFM kickboxing club returned from their latest fight with three good wins.
Five students travelled to Newcastle to take part in the three-way club competition with pupils from the Advanced Fighting Centre (AFC) and Hartlepool’s Closed Combat Arena (CCA) club.
The contest was a continuous bout of three rounds, each of two minutes with fighters in weight classes.
Kicking to both the outside and inside thigh was allowed. The event was held at the AFC’s Newcastle club last weekend.
First of the DFM fighters up on the mats was Lisa Williams. Lisa has combat experience and it showed as she dominated the first and third rounds with good combinations of punches and roundhouse kicks that kept her AFC opponent on the back foot. She took the bout two rounds to one.
Next up was novice DFM fighter Andrew Newton against an experienced AFC opponent. Andrew traded blow for blow with his adversary mixing punches and kicks with good effect as each sought dominate the first and second rounds.
The match wasn’t decided until the third and final round when the AFC fighter clinched it on the tightest of margins on a referee’s decision.
Scott Norris, a DFM novice fighter, showed good fighting spirit against a more experienced fighter from the CCA.
A good use of counter- attacking and technique saw Scott keep the bout alive right up to the dying seconds of the third round when it was won by his CCA opponent.
DFM’s Steve McLaughlin fought twice in the competition, first against a CCA fighter and then against an AFC opponent. In both fights Steve kept the pressure on right from the start using cross punches and jabs to good effect, combined with strong leg and body kicks. When his opponents picked up their pace, Steve moved up another gear dominating both hard-fought matches with determined grittiness to win both.
Chris Dunn, a novice DFM fighter, also fought twice, drawing both times in good displays of good, quick defence and counter-attack against two opponents who seemed at times to have grown an extra pair of arms and legs in the flurries of kicks and punches they put together.
DFM won three fights and lost two.
DFM kickboxing instructor Darren Currah said: “All of our students put on excellent displays of fighting spirit, technique and strategy and they’re a credit to the club.
“The novice fighters showed great promise and they can only get better and better, while our more experienced fighters again put on a great display of fighting.”
