Successful contest

DFM Martial Arts held its second annual kickboxing and grappling competition at the Willowburn Sports Centre.

Students from DFM Kickboxing, Directional Fighting Method and the Reivers MMA clubs joined together for a day of high kicks and low takedowns.

DFM Instructor Darren Currah said: "There were some very good displays of both kickboxing and shoot wrestling in the competition and all the fighters showed good fighting spirit.

"It was interesting watching those from different systems compete against one another. But no matter what core system the students came from, they all give it their best with some surprising results."

The tournament was held under a round-robin system with each contestant fighting the other contestants. The competition started with kickboxing with fighters squaring off over one round of three minutes.

Competitors were Lisa Williams, Jo Kelly, Barry Angus, Andy Newton, Steve Mclaughlan, Ryan Copeland, Georgie Currah, Laura Cook, Scott Hall, and Terri Hopper.

Points were scored for clean punches and kicks to the head and body, combinations of sweeps, low kicks and punches, and knees to the body and thighs.

Jo Kelly emerged as the eventual kickboxing winner with Andy Newton coming second. Both fighters put good, determined displays to win their medals.

The grappling contest was a no-strikes shoot-submission competition of one round of ten minute duration.

Students had to wrestle, throw or takedown the opponent and then make them submit through a lock or choke hold. Points were awarded for takedowns and submissions, attempted submissions and reversals. Steve Mclaughlan won in style with Barry Angus coming in with a good second in the contest.

DFM instructor Phil Doherty said: "The whole DFM team would like to thank all those who took part in the competition, including the officials and spectators. "There were some great fights and we are looking forward to doing it again next year."
