Try-ing hard to reach major fund-raising milestone

A major fund-raising bid to overhaul facilites at Alnwick RFC continues in earnest this month with a series of money-making events .

The Greensfield outfit has embarked on an ambitious attempt to collect tens of thousands of pounds to help fund work at the clubhouse, including new changing rooms and a gym.

Around £70,000 of the £100,000 target – which has increased from an inital £85,000 because of flooding earlier this year – has been raised so far.

But despite the positive response, those behind the bid insist the drive for cash must continue.

Penny Stewart, chariman of the fund-raising committee, said: “We have raised around £70,000 in just a few months, which is amazing, but we can’t get complacent and the fund-raising efforts must go on.

“Unfortunately, due to the flood in June, we have had to incur some additional costs fitting drains to the car park etc and increase the incoming water supply to cope with the extra showers. This has pushed the overall target up to £100,000.

“Life is never simple but with true grit and determination I know we can get there.”

As part of the fund-raising efforts, Voicemail choir will perform at the club on November 16. The compere will be Ernie Coe, while Lionheart Harmony will also be present.

Tickets are £10, including a pie and peas supper donated by Trotters Family Bakers.

An Australia Night will take place a day later at the club.

There will be a fancydress party with a winter barbecue, following the England v Australia match.

On November 23, the club will host a wine, cheese and Christmas cheer evening.

Tasting will comprise Champagne, white and red wines, as well as a port, with the chance to buy any of the wines.

Grannies in Alnwick will be providing the cheese boards.

Upon special request Proof of the Pudding will be present with samples of Christmas Puddings.

Tickets are £10 each, to include the wine, cheese and Christmas pudding tasting.

All three events start at 7.30pm.
