Aston Whitlow from Swarland has been selected to play for North England U18 Rugby Squad.

Aston Whitlow from Swarland has been selected to play for North England U18 Rugby Squad.

A Swarland teenager helped inspire North England U18s rugby side to victory against London South East.

Talented Aston Whitlow, 17, was in the thick of the action and his pick-and-go drive from the five-metre line secured the first try.

The Northerners ended up winning Sunday’s clash 21-5.

His involvement with the squad is the latest chapter in his ever-growing rugby story.

Whitlow was introduced to the sport at Alnwick’s Duchess’s Community High School, aged 13.

He joined Alnwick Rugby Club Juniors where he found a passion and love for the game.

He has represented Northumberland County at U15, U16, U17 and U18 levels and has had a personal invitation to the U20 Sports Central Conditioning Programme 2013.

At 16, he was awarded a place on the Advanced Apprenticeship Sporting Excellence programme for rugby.

He has been part of the Newcastle Falcons Development Academy programme since the age of 16 and is currently playing for the U18 Academy squad.

Whitlow’s ability, strength and physical size have seen him develop as a loose-head prop but he can also play as a tight-head prop.

He was one of 24 players to make the final cut for the North England U18s squad – an area which covers Northumberland, Cumbria, Durham, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire.

The next game is at the weekend, v The Midlands.
