A new boxing club has opened its doors, and its chairman is aiming to make it ‘the best in the UK’.

Former world champion boxer Glenn McCrory and the Duchess of Northumberland were both on hand to attend the official unveiling of Alnwick Amateur Boxing Club on Friday.

Based at the town’s St Thomas’ Close workshops – which have been totally transformed to cater for the sport – the facility is there for all of the community to use.

And after seeing the impressive-looking gym, which includes a bespoke boxing ring and an array of other equipment, former king of the ring McCrory is sure the club will be a hit for the area.

“It is brilliant,” he said.

“The facility is really impressive and it is a great base for the community.”

The opening of the club is a real success story and chairman Gary Pattinson is delighted that the dream has become a reality.

“We have had such fantastic support and the club has been well received by the community,” he said.

He added: “The club is all about the children and the rest of the community and I want to make it the best boxing club in the whole of the UK.

“Earlier this week, we had 30 children in the gym enjoying themselves and participating in sport, which was great to see.”

Thanks have been given to Alnwick Town Council, North Country Leisure, Sport England, the Multi Agency Crime Prevention Initiative, Northumberland County Council and Alnwick county councillor Gordon Castle, who have helped provide much-needed funds, guidance and encouragement.

Local businesses – Kelly Construction Master Builders, MKM Building Supplies, Alnwick Paint and Glass, and Gordon Wilson Blacksmith – have also supported the club.

Young Gloves (8yrs to 12yrs) classes will run Mondays and Wednesdays, 6pm to 7pm, youths (13yrs to 16yrs) sessions will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm to 7pm, and adult (17yrs+) classes take place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 7pm to 8pm.

All classes are mixed. Turn up on the night and complete a membership form.
