Bell to ring for fight night

An all-action bill is planned for tomorrow’s festive fight night, which has been described by organisers as the biggest event of its kind.

The showcase, which has become an eagerly-anticipated fixture in the area’s sporting calendar, returns for another year.

Previous events have packed a punch, with an entertaining evening of action, attracting a noisy and energetic crowd and proving a hit with fight fans.

But Keith MacDonald, of hosts North Northumberland Amateur Boxing Club, believes the 2012 spectacle will be bigger and better than ever.

“This is the biggest event of its kind, with some great fights planned,” he said.

“This is the most ambitious and exciting bill we have had, with fighters of all abilities and divisions.

“We have got a lot of local talent, as well as boxers from further afield.”

Locally-based boxers set to fight tomorrow include 2012 National Junior ABAE Championship finalist Cyrus Pattinson.

Brothers Judd and Danny Donohoe, Shay McNeill, Charlie Little, Josh Purvis, Michael Nixon and Josh Milburn are others from the area lined up to box.

A select team from Scotland, as well as fighters from Leeds, are set to attend.

A host of female boxers are also due to fight on the night.

Top of the bill is the fight for the Northern Area belt, between Dean Ward and Lewis Scott.

Former British champion Michael Jennings, as well as Danny ‘Boy’ Hughes, of Prizefighter fame, are due to be guests of honour at the event.

The spectacle takes place at Alnwick’s Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre from 7pm.

Tickets are selling fast but are still on sale.

Entry is £12 and tickets are available in advance, or on the door on the night.
