Members are reminded that this coming Friday (June 10) the club have the re-arranged Geoff Clark Trophy (a nine-hole, three-man, yellow ball) and the annual Peter Bradford Charity Trophy (in aid of St Oswalds Hospice) will be on Saturday, July 2. Starter sheets are now on the members’ notice board for both of these competitions.

Alnwick

It was sad news when Alnwick Golf Club members heard of the passing of one of its elder statesman last week, and the flag was hung at half mast as a mark of respect.

Bill Newbegin had been a member of the club for longer than most people could remember.

Bill served on the committee from 1961 to 1967 during which time he was also Club Captain in 1965. He served again on the committee from 1971 to 1973 and the club was privileged to have him as President from 1999 to 2001.

He was also great supporter of the Junior section and was honoured with a Life Membership for his many years service to his beloved Alnwick Golf Club.

Bill was still playing until recently at the ripe old age of 91 and could still be seen carrying his clubs as he had done for all his golfing career until a couple of years ago. A true gentleman of golf in every sense of the word and he will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

The Mick Hubbard Trophy was contested by 32 Senior members last week and coming out on top with a score of 37pts was Brian McFall. He beat Geordie Brown into second place on the countback rule. Despite a round which included three birdies at the eighth, ninth and 17th Ian Tate had to settle for third with 36pts.

Last week’s June Medal competition was coincidentally, but very appropriately, also the Bill Newbegin Trophy. The victor on this occasion was Micky Bell who with birdies at the fourth, fifth and 13th returned a three under par nett 67. In second place, only just missing out on a second victory in the same week, was Brian McFall whose score of 69 was only two adrift of the lead and with a similar score seniors’ Captain Dave Robinson was placed third on counback.

There were five twos recorded, two by Jack Friar and one each for Micky Bell, Geordie Brown and Kenny Darlow.

Barry Farrar now leads the Pacitti Cup on 210 followed by Michael Friar 211 and Mark Jones on 212. Still all very tight on the leaderboard with only 10 shots separating the top 14 places. Barry also leads the gross scored Sponsors Cup on 226 followed by Joe Henderson 227 and Jack Friar 231.

Finally this week a date for your diaries - on Saturday, July 16, Captain Billy Brown is hosting a wine tasting evening, featuring some great wines from Pieroth Wines and an auction with some fabulous lots including vouchers for Yans Restaurant, Mumbai Flavours and an autographed anchester United football to name but a few, all in aid of The Alnwick Infirmary Oncology Day Unit. Tickets are only £5 and further details are on posters in the clubhouse.
