Men’s Easter Sweep (February 17): 1 Richie Campbell (26); 2 Neville Holden (22); Joint 3 Daryl Taylor and David Inkster (21); Joint 5 Bob Boyle, Scott Provost and Geoff Baston Jnr (20). Massive congratulations to current club champion Richie for his impressive 26 points. The nine holes were completed in just 27 gross shots and included seven birdies. His card read: 2,4,3,4,2,3,3,3,3 = 27. If this is an indication of his current form then any member with ambitions of wrestling the Club Championship away from him will need to start spending a lot of time on the practice range and booking a shed-load of lessons with David Leadbetter or Butch Harmon.
Cumulative league placings (the four best scores to count): 1 Richie Campbell (81); 2 David Inkster (76); 3 Steve Foreman and his uncle Russell Archibald (75); 5 Chris Fettis (72); 6 MJ Campbell (71), with another five weeks still left to play.
Seniors Easter Sweep (February 14): 1 George Foreman (20); 2 Les Aitken (18); Joint 3 Peter Egdell, Mike Sargeant and Russell Archibald (17).
Cumulative league placings (the four best scores to count):1 Peter Egdell (71); 2 Bob Stephenson and Colin Reid (63); 4 Jack Ross (62); 5 David Gleadall (60), with another four weeks still left to play.
While the village pond overflow is still affecting much of our practice area, the well-drained tee-boxes and fairways are playing nice and firm with the greens in very good nick for the time of year. You’d be most welcome as a visitor at the oldest nine-hole links course in England.
Winter League: It was a welcome change to play in spring-like temperatures at Swansfield last weekend as members contested week 17 of the Winter League. Considering the recent weather, the course is in excellent condition and thanks must go to the greens staff for all their efforts.
No less than 50 members played and, in another high-scoring week, Ian Ferguson headed the leaderboard with a magnificent 44pts. In second place was leading left-hander Tom Lang on 41, but only on countback from Alan Dodd, who shared the same points total in third.
For statistics fanatics, which is easier to write than say, Steven Cooper, Alan Dodd and Bob Shepherd all had the best front-nine scores of 20pts. Ian Ferguson had the best back nine with 25 and Jack Friar had the highest number of birdies recorded on his card, which was four.
A moderate payout in the twos, with five players sharing the winnings, Michael Bedford, Bob Chalmers, fresh from his winter holiday, Jack Friar, Steve Barron and Russell Cooke, who holed out in two at the second.
The bacon sarnie challenge was won by default by Dan Swordy, Geoff Dobson and Gerry McInally, who actually played all 18 holes last week and scored 104 points between them. The winners would have been John Pentleton, Kenny Darlow and Bob Shepherd with 109pts but one of the team who shall here remain nameless forgot to sign his card and was unfortunately disqualified.
Order of Merit: No change in the top two with Wayne Belisle on 49pts and Malcolm Peart on 42, but Alan Dodd has now made a move into third place on 41pts just one ahead of Peter Lewis who drops to fourth. There are still enough weeks left, however, for any number of players to topple those at the top of the leaderboard.
