A north Northumberland woman, who learnt to kitesurf off the county’s coast, has been named as one of the most influential females in the sport.
Katie Chandler, who now lives in Brazil, is one of 10 finalists in the Most Influential Girl Kitesurfer 2012 contest.
The ex-Berwick High School pupil got into the sport when she watched a DVD and then had her first lessons at Beadnell Bay in 2005.
“It was pretty terrifying, but thankfully, since then, equipment and instruction have changed and it’s a lot safer and easier to learn,” she said.
“There are so many great places to kite in Northumberland, like Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh, but the best without a doubt is Budle Bay.
“It’s seasonal as it is also a wildlife reserve but it’s worth waiting for and is still without a doubt one of the most beautiful places I have ever kited.”
