Weather wipes out league fixtures

The entire Northern Alliance league programme fell victim to waterlogged pitches on Saturday, although two cup games went ahead.

North Shields Athletic reserves of the Tyneside Amateur League Division Two sent Wooler crashing out with a last-gasp extra time winner on the 3G pitch at Whitley Bay.

Wooler fought back from two goals down to take the tie into extra time as Tom Martin and Mark Forrest crashed in, but a late strike from Brian Dunn ended the Glendale sides’ interest in the competition in another tie that had been postponed three times.

Robert Jefferson fired in a hat-trick for Grainger Park Boys Club as they went into round four of the Northumberland FA Minor Cup.

The Scotswood side’s tie against Heddon St Andrew’s of the Newcastle Corinthians League had fallen foul of the weather three times before this thrilling clash, which they won 8-5 after extra-time on the all-weather 3G pitch at Gateshead Stadium in a downpour.

Dwayne Murray bagged a brace while further strikes from Kirk Fleming, Shaun Sager and Chrissie Robinson booked them a meeting with Gosforth Bohemians in the next round.

Alnwick Town’s game at home against table-toppers Ryhope CW was also postponed.
