Team performance of single goals as Rovers go nap

Rothbury Rovers U10 5 Lowick Wildcats U10 0

Glendale League, U10 Division

As Gareth Rickaby pranced across the partially frozen wastes of Glendale Middle School in a tribute to PSY’s Gangnam Style viral K-Pop single, one wished for a bottle to capture the essence of a team performance unlike any produced so far by this Rothbury side.

For a wonderful 40 minutes, Rothbury Rovers combined skilful individual technique with a wonderfully crisp heads-up-passing brand of football that was a pleasure to behold.

Right from the off Rothbury signalled their intention to play football the way it is meant to be played.

Hugh Dennis played the ball to Thorsten who found Fraser in space on the left flank.

Collecting the ball, Fraser instantly played the ball across the box to the on-rushing Gareth to smash the ball just wide of the Lowick far post.

However, Rothbury didn’t have to wait long for their opening goal.

First Gareth swept a lovely ball diagonally across the pitch to Thorsten Robinson. Instantly he played the ball across the Lowick box for Jacob Roberts to gently nudge the ball into the corner of the Lowick goal (1-0).

Next Ziggy Austin-Walker found Thorsten in space. Thorsten fed Fraser Rutherford who found Gareth Rickaby. Gareth killed the ball with his first touch and then smashed the ball home with his second (2-0). It signalled Gangnam style for Rovers.

Next on the scoresheet was Thorsten. Cutting back from the left-hand touch-line he first beat the Lowick full-back before drilling the ball past the Lowick keeper (3-0).

By now the football was flowing like a fine wine and Lowick were chasing the game.

David O’Dowd was next to score for Rothbury, calmly placing a Robinson cross past the hard-working Lowick keeper (4-0).

Lowick had strong, determined players yet their attacks were snuffed out by excellent combination play by Hugh and his covering defensive wingman, Ziggy Austin-Walker.

Half-time came and went and Rothbury continued their passing, their moving and their scoring.

Danny Seton, running onto a Lowick clearance from one of many Rothbury corners, sent a beautifully-clipped long-range shot into the bottom left corner of the Lowick net (5-0).

This goal put the seal on a truly excellent performance by Rothbury Rovers.
