The 2012 Hipsburn Trident Soccer Tournament was hailed an immense success as 12 first school teams participated in the 17th annual event. The league and knockout format resulted in Rock Hall Ospreys running out as champions in a tense final against Hipsburn Super Dudes in front of Newcastle United Reserve team manager Willie Donachie.

The former Manchester City and Scotland international presented trophies and awards after the event and encouraged all the children to participate in active sport.

Commenting on the proceedings, Mr Donachie said: “I’d like to congratulate Hipsburn First School and Trident Soccer’s Ryan Jobson for organising and hosting the tournament. It’s been a brilliant day.

“This has been a fantastic community event and it’s great to see local boys and girls involved in playing football and enjoying the fun and thrill of participation. It’s important at this age that sport is fun and children have a great time.”

Mr Donachie had earlier produced one of the humorous highlights of the day by actively encouraging a very young Acklington team.

The semi-finals were tense encounters as Rock Ospreys overcame Felton and in the second semi-final, Hipsburn Super Dudes edged out Morpeth Stobhillgate by a single goal.

The third and fourth-place play-off resulted in a win for Felton over Stobhillgate.

Player-of-the-tournament was awarded to Rock Osprey’s Jordan Robinson.

The annual school fund-raising event was described as ‘the best ever’ by Trident Soccer coach Ryan Jobson.

He said: “The atmosphere and fun today has been incredible. I’d therefore like to thank Hipsburn First School, all the parents, children and supporters as well as the helpers and volunteers involved.

“And a big thanks to match officials Richard Kelley, Rob Jackson, James Frost and my brother, Shaun and not forgetting our special guest of honour, Willie Donachie.”
