No Sunday League matches played
The Tyne-Wear derby, and inclement weather, put paid to Morpeth Sunday League (MSL) action at the weekend.
A number of teams had requested a free week for October 21, while other fixtures were called off on Sunday because of waterlogged pitches.
The Sunderland-Newcastle United game, which finished 1-1, kicked-off at 1.30pm – just three hours after the normal start times for MSL fixtures.
Chairman and vice-president of the league, Ken Gray, said: “All of Sunday’s matches were cancelled which was down to the weather and the derby match. The main reason though was the derby.
“A lot of teams had requested a free date for that week and we were able to grant them a free week.”
The Morpeth Sunday League is due to resume this Sunday. For full fixtures, see p84.
