League leaders Tillside toppled in their derby clash with Berwick

Local rivals Tillside and Berwick played each other twice in the space of 5 days as Tillside won in the quarter finals of the Birkett Cup and Berwick won in the league .

On Tuesday in the cup Tillside batted first and made a decent score of 144-3 from their twenty overs. Ross Hindmarsh top scored with 51* and was well supported by Jack Bagness with 32 and Rogi Atkinson with 30 .

Berwicks reply never really got going as Tillside picked up wkts at regular intervals, only Martin Hush and Gregor Thompson made double figures as Luke Dickson finished with excellent figures of 4-14 from his five overs and was backed up by Calum Bickerton, 3 wickets and Ben Toulson with 2 as Berwick were bowled out for 70.

On Saturday the game was again at Etal with the weather having a murky effect all day. Berwick battted first and lost a few early wickets to the bowling of Sim and Birkett and when Wright had Premchandra caught behind for a well made 28 Berwick were struggling at 38-4.

It was left to their most consistent batsmen of Middlemist and Patterson to rebuild the innings on a day that was never easy for batting. They both survived dropped catches but put on a solid 90 for the 5th wicket before Middlemist fell LBW to Hindmarsh for 39.

Patterson made 50 before he went near the end trying to up the run rate, becoming Jake Birketts fourth victim as he finished with 4-42 from his 12 overs and Berwick finished on a decent 170-7.

In reply Tillside lost a couple of early wickets to the accurate bowling of Steven Emery and when Liam Hindmarsh went for 19 they were 52-4. Birkett with Ben Toulson put 50 on for the 5th wicket and at 102-4 with 19 overs to go the game was evenly poised.

Some fine bowling by the slow left arm of Nalinda Premchandra though wrested the game back to the Berwick men as he had Birkett well caught at the wicket by Bird for 37. Skipper Hill then hit a quickfire 18 but Emery came back into the attack and had him well caught at slip.

Tillside then lost their last few wickets for only a few runs and when Toulson was last man out for 30, the Etal side were all out for 140. Emery being the pick of the bowlers with 4-25 from his 13 overs and Premchandra with 3-20.

Warkworth’s Premier League game at Corbridge was cancelled, as was the first division game between Blagdon and Warenford and the division two games involving Tillside 2nds and Embleton.

In division three, Wooler had a 29-run victory over Hebburn 2nds.

Wooler batted first, but they lost four early wickets. Jamie Comber with 33 and Robert Matthewson with 29 managed to rescue the innings after Les Porteous opened with 32. They were all out for 148 with Andy Watson taking 3041.

In reply, Hebburn also lost early wickets. Ian Longstaff hit 56 to try and lift the visitors and declan Holloway added 29, but no one else managed to get into double figures and they were all out for 119in the 37th over.

Also in division three, Rock beat Gateshead EM 2nds by five wickets. Gateshead posted 122 with Khan top scoring on 45, bowlers Oliver Page taking a creditable 4-29 and Thomas Parkinson 3-28.

In reply, Rock saw opener Kevin Wilson hit 39 not out, whilst Steven Knight also hit 39 as they went on to amass 123-5in less than 28 overs.

Alnmouth, Lesbury and Howick went dowm by 36 runs at home against Civil Service 2nds.

Sulay Kumar hit 70 as Civil Service put on 160-7, with Thorsten Robinson taking 4-38 and Callum Hindhaugh 3-18.

George Lindley hit 40 and Mick Williams 44 as Alnmouth and Lesbury replied with 124-8 in their allotted 35 overs.

Kumar took 2-9 in a fine spell with the ball and Andy Kitchener 2-39.
