Bateman the last-hit hero for Alnwick in derby

In a tense local derby at Weavers Way on Saturday, Alnwick prevailed off the last ball of the match to continue their good start to the season.

Inviting the visitors to bat first Alnwick made early inroads dismissing the dangerous openers Hughes and Russell to leave Alnmouth at 30-3.

The experience of Tom Vickers then came to the fore as he made an excellent unbeaten 76 and with Brooks chipping in with a useful 41 Alnmouth posted a competitive total of 159-9 in their 50 overs. Pick of the Alnwick bowlers was Will Smith with 4-38 along with Ben Threlfall 3-31.

The tailm howeverm dug in and Gareth Bateman and Jonathan Roxburgh took the game to the final over with Alnwick needing eight to win.
