Chevy Chase 2012 Henrietta Bolton Carter- wooler RC.

More than 200 hardy souls, including a runner from Australia, braved the elements to tackle a weather-battered Chevy Chase on Saturday.

Torrential rain forced organisers to shorten the race route, leaving plucky participants facing a 15 to 16-mile course – instead of the usual 20-mile challenge.

But the extremely boggy ground and poor visibility made for difficult conditions.

Despite the mist and murk, Carl Bell was walking on sunshine after winning the fell race. In what was his first attempt at this brutal endurance event – the 56th of its kind – the Howgill Harrier came home in 1:54:48.

Second was Hugh Aggleton of Mynyddwry De Cymru in 1:55:31 while Phil Sanderson of Elswick Harriers was third and also first MV40 in 1:57:39. Peter Rooney of South Shields Harriers took the MV50 category in 2:11:38 while Peter Reed of Northumberland Fell Runners (NFR) defended his MV60 title.

First local runner was Bruce Crombie of Alnwick Harriers in 2:10:01.

The team trophy was won by the NFR team of Nick Swinburn, Phil Green and Mark Watson.

Angela Mudge won the ladies fell race in 2:10:16. Second was Steph Scott of NFR in 2:36:43 while Henrietta Bolton Carter of event organisers Wooler Running Club was third in 2:38:13. All three were in the FV40 category.

NFR’s Marie Louise Drozdowicz was the winner of the FV50 trophy in 3:03:05 while Pam Brown of Wooler RC was the first local woman home in 2:57:08.

The Chevy Chase also featured a fiercely-contested walking event.

Tim Matthewson was the overall winner in 3:38:16 while second man, and also first MV50, was Glenn Cartner in 3:46:25. Keith Robson was first MV40 in 3:51:08.

Dieter Hofmann took the MV60 title in 3:51:05, and won the Geordie Douglas Memorial Trophy for the oldest and boldest competitor. He would also have qualified for a MV70 prize.

David Bertram was the first local man in 4:06:26.

The Ladies Cup was won by Fiona McKenzie who was also the first FV50 in 3:38:17. Angela Huddleston was second in 3:46:25, and was first local woman home. Third was Tara Bertram while Joyce Guthrie was the first FV40 home.

Christine Farnsworth and Margaret Thompson, both of Elvet Striders, crossed the line together to share the LV60 trophy in 5:15:25.

The Cheviot Angels – Fiona, Angela and Joyce – took the team prize.

The Alan Gardener Trophy, celebrating the spirit of the Chevy, went to The Young family, of Susan, Kenny and Duncan.

Thanks have been given to the volunteers, landowners, the Northumberland National Parks Search and Rescue Team, and all who took part.

Salomon was the main sponsor. Some prizes were donated by Gear For Girls and The Good Life Shop in Wooler.
